CHANT ALONG, MAKE UP A SONG

During this period, you are bound to overhear your child singing her thoughts out loud—perhaps unconsciously. Usually, the song consists of a familiar melody with the child’s own lyrics slipped in. Frequently, part of one melody will be combined with part of another; and your child may add an additional original flourish or two. Whatever the result, take advantage of this opportunity to point out to your child that she has done something creative and fun. Ask her to repeat the song, and sing it along with her. If you are able, write the song out in musical notation on a piece of paper. If you don’t know how to write music, just draw a short line for each note, higher or lower on the page to indicate the relative pitch. Then write the lyrics underneath, as with this creation (sung to the tune of “Ring around the Rosey”):
